Quit Smoking
Health
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Smoking is the greatest cause of death and disability among all diseases. Smoking is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year according to WHO statistics.
Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of more than 25 diseases, and its impact on world health has not been assessed in its entirety (WHO).
Medical research has shown that smoking is a major contributing factor causing many health problems, in particular - emphysema, and cardiovascular / heart disease and lung cancer (which has a survival percentage of 16.4%).
Nicotine
Nicotine is an element of tobacco smoke and is one of the most addictive substances that exist. When tobacco is smoked, most of the nicotine is pyrolyzed. However, a dose sufficient to cause mild somatic dependency and mild to strong psychological dependency remains. A study by Perrine concludes nicotine's potential for psychological dependency exceeds all other studied drugs -- even ethanol -- an extremely physically addictive substance with a severe withdrawal that can be fatal. Nicotine is more addictive than caffeine but of a lesser potential for somatic dependency than ethanol, cocaine and heroin, according to studies by Henningfield and Benowitz. Therefore, many smokers use nicotine compulsively.
Giving Up
It is be difficult to quit smoking. This is due to the withdrawal symptoms which may include insomnia, irritability, anxiety, decreased heart rate, weight gain, and nicotine cravings. The relapse rate for quitters is high: about 60% relapse in three months. Furthermore, nicotine users sometimes don’t want to quit smoking because they do not see the short-term damages it causes.
There are, however, a few ways to quitting smoking:
Cold Turkey
Using the cold turkey method, a smoker will set a date, and just stop smoking using will power alone. Although a lot of people have proved that this method can work, not everyone can cope with the loss of nicotine in their blood.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Nicotine Replacement Therapy is a method used to quit smoking using Patches and/or Chewing gum that contains Nicotine. Using this method, users will not crave cigarettes because their system is getting nicotine from the patches or gum. The method has a successful track record and works for many people - although a number of people find that stopping the patches or gum often gets them craving nicotine again.
