How to use
Take Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) as it is prescribed to you by your doctor. Do not take the medication in larger quantities, or for longer than recommended.  Follow all directions on your prescription label. You might need to use an additional birth control method, like condoms or a spermicide, when you first begin using Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate).
Any doctor or surgeon that treats you should know that you are currently taking Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) and if you need certain medical tests or surgery, or have to go on bed rest, you might need to stop using Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) for a short period of time.

Overdose
You should seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suspect that you have taken too much Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate). Overdose symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

Missed dose
Take a missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) at the next scheduled time.  Do not take extra doses to make up for the missed dose.

Notes
While taking Generic Aygestin, you may feel dizzy or light-headed or actually faint when getting up from a lying or sitting position. If getting up slowly doesn't help or if this problem continues, notify your doctor.

Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. KEEP THIS AND ALL MEDICATIONS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Precautions

Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) can cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not use if you are pregnant and tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment. Do not use Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) if you have any of the following conditions:

• A history of stroke or blood clot
• Circulation problems
• Breast cancer
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding
• Liver diseases
• A recent incomplete miscarriage or abortion

You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide, when you first start using this medication. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Taking hormones can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, especially if you smoke and are older than 35.
Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases--including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to help protect yourself from these diseases.

Drug Interactions

Some drugs can make Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate) less effective. Before using Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate), tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:

• Griseofulvin (Fulvicin, Grisactin)
• Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane)
• St. John's wort
• Ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox)
• A barbiturate such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton)
• HIV medication such as amprenavir (Agenerase), atazanavir (Reyataz), tipranavir (Aptivus), indinavir (Crixivan), saquinavir (Invirase), lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), ritonavir (Norvir), or nelfinavir (Viracept)

There may be other drugs that can interact with Generic Aygestin (Norethindrone Acetate). Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medication you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction:

• Hives
• Difficulty breathing
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

• Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
• Sudden headache, confusion, pain behind the eyes, problems with vision, speech, or balance
• Pain or swelling in one or both legs
• Migraine headache
• Swollen hands or feet, rapid weight gain
• Symptoms of depression (insomnia, weakness, mood swings)
• Severe pelvic pain
• Chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder
• Excessive sweating and general ill feeling
• Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite
• Dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Less serious side effects may include:

• Mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps
• Breast pain, swelling, or tenderness
• Dizziness;
• Freckles or darkening of facial skin
• Increased acne or hair growth
• Weight changes
• Vaginal itching or discharge
• Skin itching or rash
• Changes in your menstrual periods
• Decreased sex drive
• Mild headache

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effects.
